Introducing Keira's Law: Strengthening Protection Against Domestic Violence  

I am extremely proud to announce that Bill C-233, also known as Keira's Law has become law. This is a bill that I was thrilled to introduce to Parliament in February 2022, as it is a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to better protect victims and prevent future acts of domestic violence.  

 Under this important update, we have amended the Criminal Code to provide greater support and protection. Now, before granting a release order in cases involving offenses against intimate partners, judges are required to consider including a condition that the accused wear electronic monitoring devices.  

Furthermore, recognizing the critical need for our judicial system to address intimate partner violence and coercive control constructively, we have also amended the Judges Act. This amendment establishes continuing education seminars for judges, equipping them with the knowledge and expertise necessary to effectively handle cases related to domestic violence.   

We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have contributed to this transformative legislation. At the heart of our efforts lies the unwavering belief that everyone deserves to live free from violence and fear, particularly within their closest relationships. Keira's Law represents a significant step forward in breaking the cycle of domestic violence that affects thousands of individuals, including innocent children who witness or experience violence within their homes. By strengthening our laws and empowering our justice system, we aim to create a society where every individual feels safe and secure, free from the grip of domestic violence.
